Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
Again, I wish to thank all who participated in our Oktoberfest. It is always a delightful time of welcoming friends and neighbors into our midst. Also, it brings so many of our parishioners together to bring about a real sense of community in a common task of working together. This is the more important thing. Next week I will give you an account in dollars and cents.
Last week I asked you to walk around the church and look at the carpet which is in great need of replacement as you can well see. I also mentioned that no carpet company will touch the carpet because of the asbestos underneath. In brief, our building committee has looked at several options:
1.Remove the asbestos under the carpet and put down new carpet. The ex- pense of this option is about 180K. In doing this we are spending a lot of money and doing a patch-work job that will need to be remedied in the not too distant future.
2.Cover over the whole floor (including the present carpet) with vinyl or another material and then put down the carpet. This will hold for a while, but covering over existing carpet is not advisable because it could cause a buckle and need to be remedied within a few years.
3.Remove all the asbestos flooring and put down a new floor. The cost of this is approximately 270K, about 90K more than option #1 above. However, it solves the asbestos problem once and for all and puts down new flooring which will last for many years to come.
Of these three options, it seems to me that the best option for the long-term life of the parish is #3. We do have some significant reserves as well as a commitment by a benefactor for replacement of the carpet. Nevertheless, we still need to raise about 80K. After lengthy discussion with the Archdiocese of Denver, and with careful consideration of options by our building committee, we need to proceed rather quickly to take care of this. With the tearing of the present carpet which is over asbestos, there are some health and safety concerns that must be remedied. Next week, I will speak to you about how we will raise the money. If you have questions or concerns, feel very free to approach me.
God bless you all, Fr. Ed
