In the gospel this Sunday Jesus helps us to “rank” the things we love. He says that he (Jesus, who is God) is to be number one in our lives or we are not really his disciples. He even goes on to say that “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” This is an extremely difficult proposition. That we love God so much that he is truly number one in our lives. That we love God so much that even our love of the most important people in our lives, our family member and the like, pales in comparison to our love of God.
Now of course this is not an either/or statement. Jesus is not asking us to NOT LOVE our parents or our children but that the love that we have for them is to come from God the source of all love in our lives and whom we love more than anything. Jesus is showing just how radical and transformative faith in him really is. May we as a community of faith here at St Dominic Parish through our support and encouragement help each other to love God above anything else in our lives.
Thank you to all of you for all the ways you make St Dominic Parish a welcoming and loving place. When people come here, they experience the love, mercy, peace and hospitality of our God – the Community of the Trinity – in your spirit openness, hospitality and welcoming each other. Thank you for all the ways you give of yourselves to make St. Dominic Parish a place where the love of God can be encountered in a real way. Have a great summer, and enjoy the 4th of July and the freedoms we have in this country, loving about all that you do.
